Microchip Announces New PoE Switch

As companies and organizations work to improve building energy efficiency and improve building operating costs, commercial smart lighting systems are becoming more common. These systems are increasingly using Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology to manage power and data over a single Ethernet cable, providing a reliable, easy-to-install solution for the system. To promote the scale and efficiency of lighting systems, MIcrochip Technology Inc. today announced a cost-effective 8-port PoE switch, the PDS-408G PoE switch, through its subsidiary Microsemi Corporation. . The new switch ensures 60W of power for 8 ports simultaneously for digital ceiling installation. The new product complies with the IEEE 802.3bt standard and features a fanless design that produces no noise during operation.

Designed for enterprise connected lighting applications, the PDS-408G switches integrate different systems such as lighting, sensors, HVAC, and WI-FI® access points on the same switch. The switch has eight PoE ports (the optimal number of ports for networked lighting) and saves additional costs for end applications by saving energy and reducing operating costs. It complies with the IEEE 802.3bt standard and provides a total power of 480W, a maximum power of 90W for a single port, and a power of 60W for eight ports simultaneously.

The PDS-408G switch is a flammable grade that can be installed in any ventilated space and is the best choice for digital ceiling installations. The PDS-408G switch is fanless and meets the needs of buildings, hospitals, hotels, and other buildings that require high levels of quietness and reliability. In addition, it has other advantages of PoE, such as power supply security, simple installation, flexible deployment, and support for remote power management.

Rich Simoncic, Senior Vice President, MICROCHIP Analog Devices, Discrete Devices and Power Products Division, said: "The demand for Power over Ethernet (PoE) in interconnected lighting systems is increasing, and the new PoE switches are tailored for this application, PDS- The 408G will continue Microchip's leadership in PoE technology and is an IEEE 802.3bt compliant solution that delivers nearly six times the power of previous PoE standards."

The PDS-408G switch is part of Microchip's end-to-end PoE solution portfolio. Developers can use PDS-408G switches and Microchip's wide range of 8- and 32-bit PIC® and Avr® microcontrollers at the end node. To help developers accelerate their PoE design, Microchip offers a wide range of easy-to-use hardware and software tools, including PIC18 PoE motherboards with PIC18 microcontrollers, ATECC608A security devices, and MIC28512 buck regulators.
